A Very Chilled Night With Some Old Friends. Hmm...

The Joy Of Stats (Full Version). Hmm...

Since I posted a snippet of this documentary about a month ago, I've been on a mission to find the whole darn thing. Well, here it is, the wonderful world of statistics and their remarkable power to change our understanding of the world, presented by superstar boffin Professor Hans Rosling. Enjoy.

Twitter Via Your Nightstand. Hmm...

Tableau: physical email from John Kestner on Vimeo.
From what I can tell, it's just an Internet-enabled photo printer and scanner built into a wooden nightstand. The crazy thing is it apparently works really well with Twitter and is going into production next year.

Finally A Doci About Wikileaks. Hmm...

I would have thought someone would have leaked this a lot sooner. In any case, Sweden's public service television, SVT, is releasing this one-hour documentary chronicling the history of WikiLeaks. Thankfully, you don't actually have to be in Sweden to watch it. Just get some snacks (it's an hour long) click play and enjoy the bullshit from both sides. There I said it. .

Txting & Driving. Hmm...

I won't lie to you. This a pretty depressing video to watch. But it's important that you do. Have a safe and happy new year.

The World Will Never Be The Same Again. Hmm...

I imagine, for a lot of people, especially guys, this is a lot like watching the Wright Brothers fly for the first time. Only instead of a plane, it's a beer cannon lodged in a bar-fridge. And instead of Orville and Wilbur, it's a dude with an iPhone.

Keep Your New Years' Resolutions Just By Looking At Your iPhone. Hmm...

The brainchild of designer/illustrator, Chris Streger, The Resolve Project is the answer to that list you make every year. The one you stuff away in a drawer somewhere that never sees the light of day. Remember? Of course you don't. Which is exactly why Chris Streger asked a few designer friends to create a resolution for the new year as an iPhone wallpaper. After all, it's the one thing you look at every day. This way you not only get a daily reminder of your resolution, but you get a very stylish one at that. So save the one you want and use it... or make your own by downloading the template here.

Move Over Borat. Hmm...

There's a new documentary film set to expose the stupidity of a certain percentage of Americans. I'm talking about those who believe in "aliens." It's called Gawd Bless America and I, for one, cannot wait to see it.

What 2011 May Bring. Hmm...

Some 2011 trends predicted by the savvy folks at Trendhunter. If they're right, next year should rock pretty hard.

Magic & Beer. Hmm...

How in the heck are they doing this? Either way "Bottom's Up!"

Japan May Just Have The Most Delicious Whiskeys. Hmm...

The other night I had the pleasure of tasting a number of Nikka Whiskeys. They're Japanese, as you may have guessed and let me tell you, it's no wonder Japan drinks the most whiskey in the world. Their malts are delicious! Especially PURE MALT. Do yourself a favour and find some. I'm pretty sure it's what Jesus would do.

Hmm... of the day

It's not what you'd call "The Christmas Spirit" but I kinda wish I'd done this.

Flying With Delta Now Sucks Slightly Less. Hmm...

Delta recently installed iPads for public use at  dining areas at several of its gates in Kennedy Airport. Customers can order meals directly from the iPads, with delivery to their booth guaranteed in 10 minutes or less. The wireless connection to use the devices is free. So you can check flight status, surf the web and even play pre-loaded games. Oh, and just to make things even more convenient, the booths containing the iPads also feature power strips where travelers  can charge their own electronic devices. Now if Delta could only translate this kind of service on-board, they'd be unstoppable. Actually, they'd be Virgin.

If Santa Were Japanese. Hmm...

MUJI Barcelona's special gift vending machine, just in time for Christmas.

Danny McBride + James Franco + Natalie Portman + Zooey Deschanel = Hmm...

With a cast like this, this is either going to be brilliantly awesome like Shrek or one of the worst movie ever made, like Shrek 4.

Is It Okay To Laugh At What Happens In Due Date? Hmm...

Absofrikkenlutely! It's sick. It's twisted. It's the perfect cringe comedy. I haven't laughed this hard since The Hangover.

Torchwood's Christmas Video Card. Hmm...

Wow, they really like Apple. Like a fat kid loves cake.

A Video Game Without Video? Hmm...

It's called Papa Sangre and according to its creator, it's the first video game where instead of video, there's an entire world generated using 3D binaural sound. Basically, what that means is, there's no visual reference to guide you through the game. You see nothing - a black screen. So you have to play the entire game wearing headphones and navigate through pitch-black darkness using only the clues the sound design gives you to find and save the girl and then escape. Sounds pretty rad, no? Yes... excuse the pun. Buy it here

The Top 100 Artists Trending Right Now. Hmm...

My good buddy Greg just told me about this rad, new service from MTV. It's called the MTV Music Meter. It's a daily list of the most talked about, blogged about, tweeted, watched, downloaded,  interviewed, streamed and played musicians and bands in the world, according to real time buzz across the internet. Simply click on anyone in the list and instantly find out more about them, listen to their tracks and even purchase their albums. It's a flippen awesome way to discover new music on a daily basis.

The Things That You Think. Hmm...

Ever since I bought, yes bought, Ben Fold's latest album, I haven't gone more than two or three days without listening to it. It's in my car, it's on my iPhone, my iPod and on my Macbook Pro. Am I obsessed? Perhaps. But maybe, just maybe I tend to enjoy amazing conceptual albums. There just aren't enough of them around I'm sure you'll agree. This one, to my knowledge, is the only one of its kind. There are a few music videos floating around from the album. If you don't own the album, watch the videos and then do the right thing - buy an amazing album.

Solar Tents. Hmm...

Isn't it nice to know that with all the crap going on in the world, all the fears about the energy crisis, there are still a few smart people around with solutions. 3 of them to be exact that the US ARMY is currently testing:

1) The TEMPER Fly - a 16-by-20-foot tent  able to generate 800 watts of electricity.
2) The QUADrant - smaller than the TEMPER Fly, able to generate 200 watts of power.
3) Power Shades - ranging in size, able to generate up to 3 kilowatts of power.

Good news, whether you're a Navy Seal or a tech savvy camper.

The Dictionary Evolved. Hmm...

World Lens looks at any printed text through the iPhone’s camera, reads it and translates between Spanish and English. It also matches the color, font and perspective of the text, and remaps it onto the image.

Information Is Beautiful. Hmm...

David McCandless proves why good design is the best way to navigate information glut. He turns complex data sets like worldwide military spending, media buzz, Facebook status updates, etc... into beautiful, simple diagrams that reveal unseen patterns and connections - all in an effort to change the way we see the world.

A Nice Ad Agency? Hmm...

According to an article on ADFREAK, The Kaplan Thaler Group (a NYC ad agency for those of you who just went who?) had an Oprah-style surprise for its employees at its holiday party. Every one of them —all 200 or so, even their admin staff—went home with an Apple iPad! All we went home with after our end of year shindig was  cirrhosis and the future prospect of a massive hangover and photos that will forever be used against us. Let's learn from Kaplan Thaler, shall we? Yes.

Secret Cinema is a growing community that takes the moviegoing experience to a completely different level.  Secret audiences. Secret locations. Think Rocky Horror Picture show for just about any movie. For a glimpse into what it’s all about, watch the video. And for more information check out their site. For now, it's only in select European cities but perhaps one day it'll hit Joburg. Here's to hoping.

Super Cool Honda CR-Z Projection Mapping. Hmm...

Only, I can't for the life of me figure out what the heck it has to do with a sport hybrid. I know mapping is the new flavour of the month or, umm... year but I really want to try it.

Stefan Sagmeister's Living Website. Hmm...

You read it right. A living website. Check it out here.

YouTube Trends. Hmm...

Ever wondered why some YouTube videos are more popular than others? Me too. And so has YouTube apparently. So they created YouTube Trends. It gives you insight into the most watched videos on the site as well as the most popular video content trends twice a day. Using YouTube’s own internal data, you can also explore what’s popular in different cities in the US, in various countries around the world and within specific demographic sets. A pretty rad experiement, no? Si.

My New Michael Linders. Hmm...

I bought this inking a little while back from Michael Linders' exhibition at Wolves. It went for framing and I finally picked it up today. When I first saw it, it instantly reminded me of some of the old homeless people I used to run into while wandering around San Francisco when I lived there. Most were complete nuts, albeit interesting nuts. But there were a few here and there who had amazing stories to tell. Who actually chose to be homeless, to be "free" and "out of reach from the goverment." They knew everything there was to know about the 60's, it's music, it's politics and for a beer and a burger, they'd share their memories with me. Only in San Francsico... Pls don't try it here in Joburg.

Randy Pausch's Last Lecture. Hmm...

While putting together a presentation for tomorrow, I came across this video from 2007 by Randy Pausch, one of Carnegie Mellon's most admired professors. He died on July 25th, 2008. This is his last lecture. He could have talked about anything... but he chose to give out life lessons and advice on how to achieve your dreams. I remember watching this right after he died. It's as powerful now as it was back then.

A Happy Sunday Song. Hmm...

It's a few years old but it's still awesome.

The MINI Vending Machine. Hmm...

BMW Goes Subliminal. Hmm...

WWF - The Newest, Greenest PDF File Format. Hmm...

Save your PDF document as a WWF and save some trees in the process. How? Glad you asked. Basically, a WWF document cannot be printed out. It just won't let you. It's a simple way to avoid the unnecessary wasting of paper, which if we're honest with ourselves, we do all the time. So give it a try. Download the app that makes it all happen by going here.

A Christmas Present From The Gorillaz. Hmm...

Remember a while back when I posted about how The Gorillaz were recording a new album while on the road, on their iPads? Well, they're done and when you wake up Christmas morning you will be able to download it for free. The release will be available on their site and through the band’s online advent calendar. Check out  Gorillaz.com now for some free digital downloads.

2010 According To The Most Searched Topics On Google. Hmm...

My Brand New Lexus RX 450h. Hmm...

Okay. I don't own it. My client, Lexus, gave us a few to try out for the week and flippen hell, they're awesome! I actually hate the fact that I have to return it tomorrow and climb back into my crappy VW Golf. See why I'm sad by going here but really, book a test drive and feel why I'm sad. I guess I could just get in the car and drive far, far away. It is a hybrid after all. Hmm...

Now That's How You Throw An Agency Party. Hmm...

Agency party planners take note. This is how you do it. Duncan/Channon, a super creative shop in San Francisco, just celebrated their 20th anniversary in debaucherous style - the way it should be. It's how we separate ourselves from the accountants.

Wrapping Paper Just Went Digital. Hmm...

QRAPPING PAPER™ is perhaps the world's most interactive wrapping paper. Behind each QR code is one of 50 original holiday videos that you can watch right on your smartphone. That said, it'd be nice if they offered a way to upload your own video and link it to a unique QR code, but hey, baby steps I guess. Buy yours here.
If QRAPPING isn't for you because you'd prefer to personalise your wrapping paper, check out Samsung's latest project: TWEET WRAP - wrapping paper you can customize with your tweets (or any search you want) and get this, they will actually send you your wrapping paper for free!

The French Art Of Loving. Hmm...

GE's First iAd Is Pretty Cheesy. Hmm...

While it's not the best ad I've ever seen, the reason it's up here is because it's pretty rad that interactive ads (iAds) are coming to the forefront. Let's hope they get a lot cooler than this one. Though, that probably isn't very hard at all.

Fair Trade Coffee In The Heart Of Rosebank. Hmm...

The Motherland Coffee Co slap bang in the new section of The Zone in Rosebank (a few stores up from Tashas). Delicious fresh food. Ridiculously tasty fair trade coffee from Rwanda and Ethiopia, but roasted locally here in Jozi. Really chill vibe and some comfy couches. Bring your laptop. Better yet, a book.

Droga 5 Explodes Jay-Z's Autobiography In 13 Cities. Hmm...

As part of a scavenger hunt used to market his autobiography, the hip hop mogul hooked up with the creative agency Droga5 and Bing and hid all 320 pages of Decoded in plain sight in 13 cities: on a rooftop in New Orleans, a pool bottom in Miami, cheeseburger wrappers in New York City, and more. Fans who found them all got a chance at two tickets to any Jay-Z concert anywhere, for life. This may be the greatest book promotion of all time.
