The "Cheek" Of Greenpeace. Hmm...

My good friend, Michael sent me this one. According to a a friend of his in the UK, this ad's actually appearing on UK television as we speak. Whether it's working or not, well, who knows? Greenpeace prefer to provoke than persuade anyway.

Birthday Cake, Dancing Midgets And Coffee Patrón. Hmm...

One could easily argue that it's impossible not to have an amazing time with those three things around you. And last night did not disappoint. It was my good friend Cara's 27th birthday and holy crap did we party. By the end of the night we had cake on our faces, tequila in our bellies, and the strange memory of a dancing midget Mexican wrestler challenging us to a dance off. The best part? We all got home safe and the birthday girl had a rad, rad time. Though she told me today she woke up with cake in her eye. Hmm...

Staged or not, this is a brilliantly provocative breast cancer awareness vid from the brave people at coppafeel.org.

The Best Celebrity PSA I've Seen Today. Hmm...

Help Is Good. Hmm...

It's been a tough week, but thanks to the help of some awesome folks at work who took it upon themselves to jump in when they really didn't have to, the week ended pretty damn well. Take it from me or take it from the pic above, never say no to a helping hand. Unless that hand belongs to a politician or a Jew for Jesus.

Greyson Chance. Hmm...

Not since the days of the Jackson 5 has there been such a global obsession with young singers. A few days ago I posted a story about 17-year-old Graham Stokey. Today, the internet is ablaze with this young man, Greyson Chance, whose memorable middle-school performance of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” is presently the second highest rated YouTube video of all time, not to mention it's garnered over 32 million hits! Well, if that wasn't enough, he just premiered his debut single “Waiting Outside the Lines” on Ellen. Did I mention the kid's only 11?

Hmm... of the day

Took this pic today at the Eagle Print Awards breakfast function. Truly inspiring, especially considering the text was written over 100 years ago!

How They Shot The Star Wars Opening Titles. Hmm...

A camera hanging from a track, shooting a printout that's been gaffer-taped under some glass? Are you kidding me? Next time I'm going to look for the cameraman's feet beneath the last line. Vanity Fair's got a rad behind-the-scenes photo essay of the Empire Strikes Back, featuring the above shot and many more that show you how the magic was made.

The Next Justin Bieber. Hmm...

Thankfully not. This is Graham Stookey and he's far from the untalented hack that Justin Beiber is. Look out for him one day, perhaps opening for John Mayer, Dave Matthews or maybe he'll just headline.

The Frown @ Wolves. Hmm...

A little weird. A little Bjorky. A lot of fun.

Hmm... of the day

I took this photo at Wolves yesterday. They had a ton of acoustic / electro bands playing all day long. A super-awesome time was had by all. That said, I can't think of a better way to start the new week than with the words sewn into this dude's guitar strap. So, put on a happy face, people! This week's gonna rock!

The 25 Most Creative Web Videos. Hmm...

More than 32,000 submissions rolled in, from which 125 videos were plucked for the shortlistjurors including the band Animal Collective, the filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, and the graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister. Last night, the top 25 YouTube videos were announced, and, in an amazing spectacle that had the local art world buzzing, the 25 top videos were projected on the outside of the Guggenheim museum in New York. (It also streamed live on YouTube.) The videos will also be shown at the Guggenheim Museums in New York, Bilbao, Berlin, and Venice over the next few days. Awesome. And even more awesome is South Africa's own Die Antwoord made the list!

A Thought For The Upcoming Blackout Season We All Know Is Coming. Hmm...

JR Is The 2011 TED Prize Winner. Hmm...

I've long been a fan of JR - an anonymous large scale street artist who travels to villages around the world, photographing the people who live there and learning their stories then pasting his striking images onto massive local canvases: buildings, buses, roads and bridges. Using his art for good, he builds mass awareness for people and places long forgotten by the media. It's no wonder he's just won this prestigious prize from the wonderful people at TED. Find all his awesome work here.

More Zoolander? Hmm...

It may only be a rumour, but Ben Stiller is set to reprise his role as Derek Zoolander in a series of animated web shorts that “could grow into television shows, feature films and even online social games.” And, if things go really well, maybe even a Center For Children Who Can’t Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too. Come on Ben, do it for the children!

Where You'd Rather Be. Hmm....

So, those evil-genii at Corona took a road trip down the west coast of Mexico in a beat-up 1976 Winnebago. Legendary surf director Taylor Steele captured the entire journey on film while Chris 'Hollywood' Searl shot this amazing Flickr set. Now, who needs a flippen vacation? We all do.

Collaborative Music/Spoken Word. Hmm...

You'll have to go the site to see it in action, but every video is designed to work seamlessly with the others, creating a super rad sound experience. We proposed something like this for one of our brand projects years ago. Sadly, it ever made it off the concept room floor. Why? Long, silly jellyfish story. Glad to see someone took the leap though. Yay!

Doc Martens Turns 50. Hmm...

Dr. Martens: 50 Years of Rebellion from hypebeast.tv on Vimeo.

Foursquare For Good. Hmm...

My dad sent me this awesome article from the NYTIMES about how commuters in San Francisco are using their smartphones to "check in" at billboards using Foursquare and in-so-doing, help some endangered wildlife keep from becoming extinct. What a flippen cool way to use social media for good, no? That said, Foursquare is growing in SA. I use it every day. If, however, you have no idea what I'm talking about, check out their site and start using it today. It's a super rad way to get to know your city and let people know where you are. Who knows, one day you may use it for the benefit of mankind like they are in SF.

A New Way Of Looking At Search. Hmm...

Bing is a search engine. It's been popping up in sitcoms and movies, thanks to a ton of product placement cash most likely, as an alternative to Google. And before today, I've never really even considered it but they're getting clever. Take their new 'decode Jay-Z' site: over 300 pages of Jay-Z's life and lyrics are placed in the streets of NYC. You pick a clue, decide the path and claim the page in this online game and all the while search for info on the music mogul/rapper/entrepreneur/whatever he is today. Beats searching just text if you ask me. Well, at least in this case.

A Rad Surprise. Hmm...

I posted a while back about how Ben Folds and Nick Hornby got together do make an album. Well, I went against my nature and actually ordered the CD online. It arrived in a beautiful box set with 4 exclusive short stories by Nick Hornby, some amazing pics of the sessions and even an unexpected bit of memorabilia: a handwritten and scored page of tab from my favourite song off the album: Picture Window. Autographed and all. How fucking cool is that? Oh, the album is flippen fantastic!!!! Do the right thing.

Half A Dog. Hmm...

I bought him yesterday. How rad?

Escaping Joburg Without Leaving The City. Hmm...

Nestled within the Montrose Nursery on South Road in Morningside is a little gem of an eatery called Gia's. Amazing burgers and salads not to mention an atmosphere perfect for an upmarket picnic-type lunch and I hear, a breakfast menu to die for, it's the perfect getaway if you can't get away.

iPhones As Musical Instruments. Hmm...

Brooklyn-based alternative rock band Atomic Tom perform “Take Me Out” — the lead single off their debut album The Moment — on a NYC subway train. With their iPhones.

The Song For Everyone. Hmm...

Ze Frank is an internet guru of tremendous fame. All he does is connect with people through super-creative online projects that he dreams up and puts into action. He was contacted by a random lady a while back to write her a song to calm her down as she had just moved to a new city for a new job and was freaking out. So he asked her to email wha she was feeling and used those thoughts as basis fort eh lyrics. He then got people around the internet to record themselves singing the song and then send them to him so he could use the best voices for the final score. He sent her the song a month later. It's pretty rad and applies to everyone I guess. The internet really can be a wonderful place. Enjoy.

Big Concerts' "Mysterious" Email. Hmm...

So Big Concerts sent out an email containing only this image and a link to a Facebook page where you can join a big "reveal" of a certain band they're bringing out to South Africa in Feb 2011. Now, you have to applaud them for trying to be all cloak and dagger. No images on the site except this one. Posting little bits of trivia about the "mysterious" band. But really guys, any true music fan knows who the band is. U2, of course! So get ready for one of the most amazing concerts ever! I talk, luckily, from personal experience having seen them a few years ago in the States. They are unbelievable and even though I'm sure the tickets will be radonkulously expensive, it'll be worth every cent to watch the best live band in the world blow your mind.

I love that this is my new Client!

How About Some New Music? Hmm...

They're called The Lines and they just released their debut album 2 days ago. This is theire first single, El Matador. I think we can expect big things from these guys. At least I hope so. To get some free downloads and to find out more about the band, head to their site.

Awesome News Of The Day. Hmm...

31-year-old Florencio Avalos is the first Chilean miner to be rescued after spending 69 days trapped inside the San José copper-gold mine, 2,300ft. underground. Last I heard they had rescued five more. Finally!

Gap Gives Back. Hmm...

Gap's been in the news lately over it's horrid new logo design (they've recently moved back to the old one btw) but what they really should be in the news for is this initiative they're running. Bring in your old jeans, get 30% off a new pair (40% if you LIKE them on Facebook) and they'll use your old jeans to help insulate homes in need for the upcoming winter season. But no, I bet people are still talking about their stupid logo.

Contagiousness. Hmm...

The film is out October 27 and will be available to view online. It was directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson and produced by R+I Film, New York.

The World's First Online Test Drive. Hmm...

This is yet another super rad idea from the fine fellows at 180/LA, including my good friend Matthew Woodhams-Roberts - the art director on this project. Proud of you, buddy.

A Rad New Online Resource For Creatives. Hmm...

This is a really cool resource for anyone wanting to know more about some of the finest marketing campaigns ever done. YouTube style, of course. Show & Tell lives here.

Educational Rap. Hmm...

Singles by educationalrap
These guys may just have figured out how to save the world's school system. After all, what do most kids listen to? I'll give you a clue, it's not their teachers. So rap songs with educational lyrics that cover math, geography, economics, grammar... pretty much anything in a fun, entertaining and easy to understand way is the perfect solution.

An Oldie But A Goodie. Hmm...

I guess the message here is even when it's grey and raining and you're feeling hassled... give it the finger and have a flippen awesome time regardless. Peace!

Calvin Klein's USB Sunglasses. Hmm...

Calvin Klein's new sunglasses couple storage with UV protection thanks to a 4GB USB flash drive embedded in the right arm. If only they could store images of what you're looking at through the glasses. How cool would that be?

I received this sms alert yesterday from the security company that patrols my neighbourhood. Only in Africa I guess :)

Well, Hello Weekend. Hmm...

So, we made it. Our first week at our new gig is almost at an end and we're still standing. Phew! Something tells me though that Saturday morning will be filled with the sweet sounds of my horrid snoring. Can't wait.

AC/DC Infiltrates The Corporate Firewall. Hmm...

While researching their audience to promote AC/DC’s latest album, Black Ice, Sony Music found that most AC/DC fans (in the UK) are middle aged businessmen working at big business corporations. Now because of the treats from hackers and adult-orientated websites, company firewalls prohibited most files from getting through to his audience. The only universal file which could pass through their email servers unaffected was an excel document. That said, may I present to you for free download, the world's first official Microsoft Excel music video.

Swedish Secrets. Hmm...

I have no idea what this is about but it's super pretty to watch. Yowsers!

My First Day. Hmm...

So this is me in the early 80's. It's my first day of school. That's my mom. See how I look there? Awwwww.... cute, right? I'm feeling pretty much the same this morning, my first day at my new job at DraftFCB. Happy. Spirited. Best of all I don't have to wear a stupid uniform. All that's left to say is. "Bring it, world. Bring it."

Page 99. Hmm...

Apparently many people around the world use the page 99 rule before buying a book. The rule states that page 99 of any book will give you a perfect insight into the way it is written and how the story/content is shaping. Not sure if that's entirely true, but then again I've never tried it. So that's cool but what may be slightly better is the Page99Test website. It's designed to give aspiring writers an indication of whether people will enjoy their book or not. Just upload page 99 of your manuscript to the site, the public will read it along with all the others and then rate whether they'd buy the book. Now, all that said, the site is still getting it's shit together, so just give them your email address and they'll contact you when they go live. If anything, see it as a place to go have a quick read before bed, perhaps even on the crapper :) You could be reading the next Nick Hornby. Which is always a good thing.

It's Tuesday But It Feels Like Monday. Hmm...

So here's a music song to chase those Monday/Tuesday blues away. It's by the music group: Duck Sauce and it's called Barbra Streisand. Why it's called that, I have no idea. And who are Duck Sauce? Well, happily it's a duo consisting of A-Trak and Armand Van Helden. Please enjoy. :)

Headphonies. Hmm...

Now they've gone and done it. Some super genius has mixed the awesomeness that is a  vinyl toy and the love that is music to create Headphonies. Tiny speakers built into super-cool vinyls that generate rad sound (I tried 'em out before buying one of course). They're at the Xupa store in Cape Town. I imagine for not much longer though... ROCKING!

Back To Normal. Hmm...

Back to Jo'burg.
Back to work - new & wonderful work @ a new & wonderful agency :)
Back to nights that don't end up becoming back-to-back 5am nights.
Back to routine.
Back to healthy.
Back to favourite nooks and crannies.
Back to all the things worth going back to.
Back to good.

Day Two Of Loeries. Hmm...

All I can say is thankfully the parties have all been amazing because the awards, so far, have been super kak. Everyone just sat last night at the Good Hope Centre wanting to leave, not to mention the lack of awards given out made us ego-bruised ad guys all the more ready to party our faces off. Which we did. A lot. We all have no faces.

Miniature San Francisco. Hmm...

Even though Cape Town rocks, San Francisco will always be my most loved city.

Die Antwoord Play At The Loeires. Hmm...

So we're one day into The Loeries Advertising Festival and already people are partied out. Yesterday alone were 3 production house parties, the best of which was the Terraplane one. Why? Because they got Die Antwoord to rock the stage live and holy crap did they impress! I took video of their performance with my iPhone but sadly when I played it back this morning all you hear is horrible distortion. That said, please enjoy the official "Enter The Ninja" music video (7.6million hits on YouTube - awesome!) from one of South Africa's most original, creative and successful music groups: Die Antwoord.

I'm off to breakfast. Yay!

Jetting Off To The Loeries. Hmm...

This morning I board a plane to Cape Town, which is quite a feat considering last night was my and my art director's official farewell party from The Jupiter Drawing Room - which involved loads of alcohol, one or two speeches and even a trip to the emergency room for a certain someone (not me) who lost his balance and decided to split his eyebrow open on the outdoor floor of Hooters - classy, right?. We're gonna tell people he's a boxer instead of a drunk :) But I digress. Today is the start of The Loeries which means even more partying, shenanigans and, oh yes, two night of advertising awards shows to look forward to, no doubt leaving the stunning beauty of Cape Town in tatters. Wish us luck.
